The Shape of the Case
A cartridge case is not a plain tube; it has a deliberate profile made of a neck that holds the projectile, a shoulder where the case steps down in diameter, and a body that often tapers toward the base. Each feature does a specific job, and all of them are held to dimensional standards so that ammunition and chambers stay compatible across makers.
The Neck
The neck is the narrow forward section that grips the projectile and keeps it aligned with the bore before firing. Neck tension, the interference fit between case mouth and bullet, must be firm enough to hold the projectile in place during handling yet consistent enough to release it uniformly when fired. A neck that is too loose or too tight degrades both retention and accuracy.
The Shoulder
On a bottleneck case the shoulder is the angled step between the wider body and the narrower neck. In many designs the shoulder is the surface that stops the cartridge in the chamber, thereby setting headspace, the precise distance that positions the round for firing. Because it locates the case, shoulder angle and position are tightly specified.
Body Taper
Body taper is a slight narrowing of the case from head to shoulder. A tapered body slides into the chamber easily on loading and, just as importantly, releases and extracts smoothly after firing when the brass has expanded against the chamber wall. Taper is a functional feature, not a cosmetic one.
Bottleneck Versus Straight-Wall
Cases fall into two broad shapes. A bottleneck case has a distinct shoulder and a neck narrower than its body, letting a large powder charge drive a smaller-diameter bullet. A straight-wall case has little or no shoulder and headspaces differently, often on the case mouth or rim; many revolver and some rifle cartridges use this simpler form.
Worked Example
Take the .308 Winchester, a classic bottleneck case. Its wide body holds a substantial propellant charge, its body tapers gently toward the head so it chambers and extracts cleanly, and its 20-degree shoulder steps down to a neck that grips a .308-inch bullet. That shoulder also sets headspace: the chamber is cut so the shoulder stops in exactly the right place, positioning the round consistently shot after shot.
A Common Misconception
It is easy to assume every cartridge headspaces on its shoulder. Only bottleneck cases typically do. Straight-wall cases usually headspace on the case mouth or on a rim instead, so the feature that positions the round depends on the case's overall geometry rather than being universal.
