Describing a Projectile's Nose
The front of a projectile is shaped for aerodynamics, and two terms describe that shape precisely: the ogive, the curved forward portion, and the meplat, the small flat or tip at the very front. Together they govern how cleanly a bullet slips through the air, which is why they appear in serious ballistic descriptions.
The Ogive
The ogive is the tapering curve that blends the bullet's full-diameter body into its nose. Its shape is often described by a radius: a longer, gentler curve, sometimes called a secant or tangent ogive depending on how it meets the shank, generally parts the air more efficiently. A sleeker ogive is a major contributor to a higher ballistic coefficient, meaning the bullet retains velocity better downrange.
The Meplat
The meplat is the tiny frontal area right at the nose, whether a flat, a rounded tip, or the mouth of a hollow point. Even though it is small, it sits at the point of highest air pressure, so its size and consistency measurably affect drag. Batch-to-batch variation in meplat diameter is one reason otherwise identical bullets can show slight differences in long-range behavior.
Ballistic Coefficient
Ballistic coefficient, or BC, is a single number summarizing how well a projectile overcomes air resistance, and nose geometry drives much of it. A long ogive and a small, uniform meplat lower drag and raise BC; a blunt nose and wide meplat do the opposite. BC is why two bullets of the same weight and caliber can drop and drift very differently.
Tipped and Meplat-Trimmed Designs
Because meplat inconsistency hurts uniformity, makers use two fixes. A polymer tip is molded into the nose to create a consistent, aerodynamic point and to standardize the frontal shape. Alternatively, some match projectiles are meplat-trimmed or pointed after forming so every nose in a lot matches closely.
Worked Example
Compare a round-nose bullet with a modern tipped match bullet of the same weight and caliber. The round-nose has a short ogive and a broad meplat, so it sheds velocity quickly and has a low BC, fine for short range. The tipped match bullet uses a long, gradual ogive and a polymer tip that fixes a small, uniform meplat; the result is a markedly higher BC, flatter flight, and less wind drift at distance.
A Common Misconception
People often think a sharp-looking pointed tip alone makes a bullet fly flat. What matters most is the ogive's length and profile, with the meplat as a fine-tuning detail. A pointed but short ogive can still have mediocre drag, while a well-formed long ogive with a modest tip outperforms it. Shape of the whole nose, not just the point, sets performance.
