Measuring Chamber Pressure

When a cartridge fires, burning propellant produces gas that spikes the pressure inside the chamber for a few thousandths of a second. That peak pressure is a critical safety parameter, and industry bodies define maximum values so ammunition and firearms remain matched. Two measurement methods appear in reference materials, and confusing them leads to real errors.

PSI via Piezoelectric Transducer

The modern standard measures peak pressure in pounds per square inch using a piezoelectric transducer. This sensor sits at a defined point on the test barrel and outputs a voltage proportional to the force pressing on it, capturing the pressure curve electronically and continuously. Because it records the true peak directly and repeatably, PSI by transducer is the method behind most current published maximums.

Copper Units of Pressure

The older CUP method places a precisely made copper pellet, or crusher, over a piston in the test barrel. Firing compresses the copper, and the amount it shortens is compared against a calibration table to yield a value in Copper Units of Pressure. Because the copper deforms over the whole event rather than reporting an instantaneous peak, CUP captures pressure differently from a transducer.

Why the Two Are Not Interchangeable

It is tempting to treat PSI and CUP as the same scale, but they are not. The crusher method tends to under-report the true peak because copper keeps deforming as pressure changes, so a CUP figure and a PSI figure for the same cartridge are generally different numbers. There is no single reliable conversion factor that turns one into the other across all cartridges.

Standardizing Bodies

Maximum pressures are published by standards organizations such as SAAMI in the United States and the C.I.P. in much of Europe. Each specifies the test barrel, the measurement location, and the ceiling value, so a rating means something only in the context of the standard that produced it.

Worked Example

Suppose a reference lists one cartridge at a maximum of about 35,000 CUP and another modern loading at 62,000 PSI. A reader might wrongly conclude the second is merely "27,000 more" of the same thing. In reality the two figures come from different instruments and different physics; the only sound comparison is CUP against CUP or PSI against PSI, using values generated under the same standard.

A Common Misconception

The frequent mistake is assuming CUP and PSI can be swapped or converted with a fixed multiplier. They cannot. They are separate measurement systems producing separate numbers, and mixing them, or applying a rule-of-thumb conversion, can badly misrepresent how hot a load actually runs.
