A Distinct Branch of Design
The shotgun developed along its own engineering path, optimized to fire a charge of many small pellets, or sometimes a single slug, through a typically smooth bore. Because its purpose was to distribute a spreading pattern rather than a single precise projectile, its design priorities diverged early from the rifle. That divergence produced a specialized vocabulary of gauge, choke, and action types still used in technical references.
Gauge
Gauge is the shotgun's traditional bore-size measure, and its logic surprises newcomers because a smaller number means a larger bore. The figure derives from the number of round lead balls of bore diameter that together weigh one pound, so twelve such balls make a 12 gauge. The .410 is the common exception, expressed as an actual bore diameter in inches rather than by the ball count.
The Smoothbore
Most shotguns use a smooth, unrifled bore so that the shot charge is not spun, which would fling pellets outward and destroy the pattern. Keeping the bore smooth lets the cluster of pellets travel together and spread in a controlled cone. This is the fundamental engineering reason the shotgun evolved separately from the rifled long gun.
Choke
Choke is a slight constriction near the muzzle that squeezes the shot column as it exits, tightening the downrange pattern. Historically choke was fixed by boring the barrel, but later designs added interchangeable screw-in tubes so one barrel could be tuned from open to tight. Terms such as cylinder, modified, and full describe increasing degrees of constriction.
The Break Action
The break, or hinge, action pivots the barrels open at a breech hinge to expose the chambers for loading. It appeared prominently in the era of self-contained shells and remains valued for its simplicity and obvious open-breech safety check. Side-by-side and later over-under barrel arrangements are both break actions.
Repeating Actions
Demand for faster follow-up shots drove pump-action designs, cycled by sliding the forend, and self-loading designs that harness recoil or gas to reload automatically. Each broadened how many shells a shotgun could deliver without reloading. These mechanisms adapted repeating principles already proven in rifles to the shotgun's larger, lower-pressure shell.
Worked Example
Picture a late nineteenth-century side-by-side break-action shotgun bored 12 gauge with a fixed full choke in one barrel and a more open choke in the other. The shooter selects the tighter barrel for distant targets and the open barrel for close ones, using barrel choke, not sight adjustment, to control pattern.
A Common Misconception
Many assume a shotgun requires no aiming because the shot spreads widely. In reality the pattern at typical ranges is often only a modest cluster, so the gun must still be pointed accurately; the spread supplements aim rather than replacing it.
