Refining the Revolver

The double-action revolver advanced handgun design by letting a single continuous trigger motion both rotate the cylinder and release the hammer to fire. Earlier revolvers required the shooter to thumb-cock the hammer for every shot, a slower and more deliberate act. Consolidating those steps into one trigger pull changed how revolvers were used and described.

Single Action Versus Double Action

In a single-action revolver, pulling the trigger only releases an already-cocked hammer, so the hammer must be manually cocked first, which also indexes the cylinder. A double-action mechanism performs both jobs from the trigger alone: the pull raises and releases the hammer while advancing the cylinder. Most double-action revolvers can still be fired in single-action mode by cocking the hammer manually for a lighter, shorter pull.

Cylinder Indexing and Timing

A rotating hand, or pawl, pushes against a ratchet on the cylinder to turn it one chamber per cycle. A spring-loaded bolt then drops into a notch to stop and lock the cylinder in exact alignment with the barrel. This precise timing between hand, ratchet, and bolt is essential, because a chamber out of alignment would not fire safely.

The Swing-Out Cylinder

A major practical refinement paired the double-action mechanism with a cylinder that swings out to the side on a crane. With the cylinder open, all chambers can be unloaded and reloaded at once, often aided by an ejector that pushes spent cases clear together. This made the double-action revolver far quicker to reload than earlier gate-loaded or muzzle-loaded designs.

The Trigger Stroke and Lockwork

The long, deliberate double-action trigger stroke is a safety feature in itself, since it takes a firm, intentional pull to fire. Internally, a train of parts, the trigger, hand, hammer, and springs, must move in a fixed sequence, and the study of this lockwork produced much of the vocabulary used to describe revolver mechanisms. The weight and smoothness of that stroke became a defining quality of a given design.

Worked Example

Picture a swing-out double-action revolver being fired steadily. Each trigger pull rotates the cylinder to the next loaded chamber, cocks and drops the hammer, and fires, all in one motion; when empty, the shooter presses the release, swings the cylinder out, and ejects all six cases together before reloading. The same gun can instead be thumb-cocked for a single precise shot with a much lighter pull.

A Common Misconception

Double action is often assumed to mean the revolver fires two rounds or fires automatically. It actually refers to the trigger performing two actions, cocking and releasing the hammer, in a single pull. It fires one shot per trigger press, exactly like a single-action revolver, just without the separate cocking step.
