Thread Pitch and Muzzle Threading Terminology

Reading Thread Specifications

Many barrels are threaded at the muzzle so accessories can attach securely and concentrically. The thread is described by a standardized notation that captures its diameter and how finely it is cut. Reading that notation lets you confirm whether a component and a barrel share matching threads before drawing any conclusion about fit.

Diameter and Pitch

A designation such as 1/2-28 states the nominal thread diameter, one-half inch, followed by the number of thread crests per inch, twenty-eight. A designation such as 5/8-24 follows the same pattern with a five-eighths inch diameter and twenty-four threads per inch. Both numbers must match between a barrel and a component for the threads to engage properly.

Threads Per Inch Versus Metric Pitch

Imperial threads count threads per inch, so a higher number means finer, more closely spaced threads. Metric threads instead state the pitch as the distance between threads in millimeters, as in M13x1, where 1 means one millimeter between crests. In metric notation a smaller number means finer threads, the reverse of the imperial convention.

Thread Class and Fit

Beyond diameter and pitch, threads have a tolerance class that governs how tight or loose the mated parts sit. A tighter class produces minimal play and better concentric alignment, while a looser class assembles more easily. Precision muzzle threads favor a controlled fit so an attached device aligns squarely with the bore.

Concentricity and Shoulder

Correct function depends not only on matching threads but on the threads being cut concentric to the bore, with a squared shoulder for the device to seat against. If the threads are off-axis, an attached device can sit crooked even when the pitch and diameter match perfectly. This is why muzzle threading is a precision machining operation.

Worked Example

Compare a barrel marked 1/2-28 with one marked 1/2-36. Both have a half-inch nominal diameter, but the first has 28 threads per inch and the second has 36, making the second finer. A device cut for 1/2-28 will not thread onto a 1/2-36 barrel despite the identical diameter, because the pitch differs. Only when both the diameter and the thread count match will the two mate.

A Common Misconception

A frequent error is assuming that any two threads of the same diameter will fit together. Diameter is only half of the specification; the pitch must match as well, and imperial and metric systems are not interchangeable. A 1/2-28 and a 1/2-36 share a diameter yet will never thread together, so both figures must be confirmed.
