A Window, Not a Number
Point-blank range is the span of distances over which a projectile stays within a chosen vertical margin of the line of sight, so a single aiming hold produces acceptable hits without adjustment. It is best understood as a window bounded by a near and a far distance rather than a single figure. Everything about it depends on how large a margin the analyst is willing to accept.
Defining the Vertical Margin
The concept begins by choosing a maximum acceptable rise above and fall below the aiming line, often expressed as the radius of a target zone. The projectile is allowed to arc up to that ceiling in the middle of its flight and drop to that floor at the far end. The tighter the chosen margin, the shorter the resulting window.
The Maximum Point-Blank Zero
For any chosen margin there is an optimal zero that stretches the window as far as possible. This maximum point-blank zero is set so the trajectory just touches the upper margin at its peak and does not fall through the lower margin until the far edge of the window. Choosing this zero squeezes the longest usable span from a given trajectory.
Near and Far Boundaries
The near boundary is the first distance at which the rising projectile enters the acceptable zone, and the far boundary is the distance at which the falling projectile exits it. Inside those two limits the reader can aim at the center of the zone and expect hits without holding over or under. Outside them, correction becomes necessary.
Why Flatter Trajectories Help
A projectile that shoots flatter, through higher velocity or a better ballistic coefficient, spends more distance inside any given margin. Flattening the arc pushes the far boundary outward, lengthening the window. This is the practical payoff of aerodynamic efficiency expressed in point-blank terms.
Worked Example
Suppose a reader accepts a margin of three inches above and below the aiming line, corresponding to a six-inch target zone. A flat-shooting projectile might allow a maximum point-blank zero near 250 yards, giving a usable window from roughly the muzzle out past 290 yards. Shrink the accepted margin to two inches and that far boundary pulls back considerably, because the trajectory reaches the tighter floor sooner.
A Common Misconception
Point-blank range is often misread as meaning very close, as if it describes a muzzle-contact distance. In ballistics it instead names the entire span over which no aiming adjustment is needed for a stated margin. A quoted point-blank figure is meaningless unless the assumed target size or vertical margin is stated alongside it.
